EU Considers Delaying AI Act Rollout Amid US and Big Tech Pressure
Brussels officials are weighing potential delays to parts of the AI Act following sustained pressure from American tech giants and the TRUMP administration. A draft proposal under discussion includes a one-year grace period for companies using high-risk AI systems and a postponement of fines for transparency violations until August 2027.
The European Commission will decide on a "simplification package" by November 19, 2025, which could reshape the implementation timeline. While some restrictions on dangerous AI systems took effect in February 2025, the toughest rules for high-risk systems were originally slated for August 2026.
Major US tech firms, represented by groups like the Computer and Communications Industry Association, have aggressively lobbied against the regulations. The potential delay marks a significant departure from the EU's earlier hardline stance on AI governance.
